Code of Conduct for the Use of Technology

Rick Hansen Public School

Staff and students at Rick Hansen are working towards creating a positive school culture that supports safe and responsible technology use. We are striving to raise digital leaders who use technology as a tool for learning, and a source of information. The use of technology is a privilege, not a right and students are expected to use technology and the internet responsibly for their educational goals.

To be a digital citizen, you are expected to:

Personal Devices

  • Be responsible for the transport, care, and protection of their personal devices
  • Have a signed ‘Bring Your Own Device’ form must be on file
  • Personal devices are ONLY to be used for educational purposes under the direction and supervision of a teacher
  • Refrain from taking pictures and/or video on school grounds or bus, without the direct instruction of a teacher
  • Use appropriate online games during non-instructional time. If you chose to use your phone during non-instructional time (i.e., lunch), social media sites and YouTube are not permitted.

Internet

  • Have the permission of a staff member before accessing the internet
  • Be supervised by a staff member while using the internet
  • Use ONLY sites approved by a teacher
  • Protect your personal information and passwords
  • Put information in your own words and credit the site
  • Report inappropriate internet sites
  • Understand that SNAPCHAT, FACEBOOK, Instagram, and other known social media sites are NOT to be accessed at school

Equipment

  • Respect the hardware supplied and leave all settings intact
  • Transport/store equipment as instructed
  • Carry equipment with two hands
  • Use an assigned computer/hand-held device
  • Use only the software/app approved by the teacher
  • Avoid eating/drinking near equipment
  • Sign out all equipment
  • Charge equipment after use
  • Unplug using the adaptor, not the cord

Saving/Printing

  • Understand that network shared drives (e.g., Google) are property of TVDSB and can be searched/accessed by computer administration at any time
  • Store personal files/data in your own system drive
  • Secure permission from a staff member before printing
  • Understand that printing is costly; preview print jobs first and be aware of which printer is being selected
  • Ask your teacher to retrieve your work from the photocopy room

Inappropriate use of computer resources, hand-held devices, and/or the internet will result in progressive discipline. If the actions of a student appear to break the law, the police will be informed.
